What is Wrong with the World?

DSC_5100What is wrong with this modern world? It is a question that everyone should be asking themselves.

The news we read or listen to every day is always about something horrible that has happened somewhere or to someone in this country or across the World. I understand that to make things newsworthy require some sort of sensationalism but it is very sad that so much of it relates to violence in one form or another that man is inflicting on each other. It is not just this country but many that are having this problem.

For better or worse, we are in an age of instant notification. If something happens that someone, somewhere deems as newsworthy, whatever it may be, it is broadcast around the world in an instant and becomes common knowledge to anybody that cares to read or listen to it. So, the question arises, “Was the world always like this and we just didn’t learn about it prior to the Internet and other forms of information sharing?” Because of the instant notification, is it creating a copycat instinct in people’s mind to be bigger and badder than the person they just read about?

When I was growing in England 70 years ago, life was so simple. There were no TV’s or computers. We didn’t even have a phone and our only form of contact with the world was by radio and the BBC. We would be glued to it listening to the news about the ongoing World War 11 and in the early years, wondering if jerry would cross the Channel and attack us. When the war ended, it took a long while before TV was introduced and with it came the first changes to a quiet way of living which would never ever again, be the same.

I came to America when I was 32 years old for the betterment of my family and myself mainly because I was given the opportunity. In the early years, life was quiet and reminiscent of the English way of life with an American twist to it and although there were personal setbacks along the way, I adopted this country as my own and became a citizen. Now, as time goes by, I am becoming increasingly aware that things are changing. Sure, I am an old man now and not much longer for this world but what I see going on around me makes me so very sad.

Parents no longer take or have the time to teach their kids about simple things like common decency and good manners and being polite and not so demanding. It is an uphill battle as the kids are bombarded from all sides with information both good and bad and they are forever to be found with their noses glued to their cell phones. I was in the doctor’s office the other day and these two kids came in probably around 16-17 years old. The girl had a recently broken nose which still included two black eyes and a huge plaster strip over it. They saw the doctor and came out with the girl leading the way. At the door leading out of the office, the girl opened the door and held it open to let the guy go out first. My immediate reaction was incredulity that she, the injured one would open the door for him and he never made any move to get to the door first or to offer her any help. Where were his manners or his concerns. Has he never been taught what manners are? I guess the bigger question may be that do the younger sexes consider themselves to be equal and things like good manners or treating the female sex in a special way are no longer important.

I see families walking around the Supermarket and the kids that are in their teens have their noses glued to their phones. There is no conversation within the family unless one of the parents asks one of the kids to get something and immediately following that, the noses are back into the phones. It makes you wonder what sort of a family life do people have nowadays.

Which brings me back to where I started. It appears that violence is on an increase and everything can become a lethal weapon. It is no longer just a gun or a knife although these are usually the weapons of choice but now the automobile joins the list of murder tools. What is really frightening is the lack of moral character that these individuals that commit these murders display. Whether the problem is drugs or alcohol or just a plain ole chip on the shoulder, this country and the world in general are becoming less and less safe.

Do I have a solution? I wish I could say that I did but I don’t. Sometimes there is a lot to be said for the good old days when life was so simple, comparatively speaking. Modern gadgets are supposed to help us and make life better and from many points, they have with the advances in medicine and man’s trip to the moon bringing with it modern technology. I guess there is a price to pay for all of this advancement and it is showing up in all of the violence. People are empowered like never before and when they feel like it, take the law into their own hands and only after do they realize the consequences.

Too bad as this country has so much potential but the quality of leadership is declining and along with it, the American Dream and the American Way of Life. If I was a religious man I should say, “God help us all” about now but I doubt that even he can do much to help a world that is turning on itself. Or maybe, that is a part of His plan given the way we treat the world. Maybe, we are reaping the rewards for all of our efforts to destroy the world through Global Warming. Are we being manipulated?

Thoughts on Life – June 13, 2017

DSC_5321

It seems that when I choose to write
unless it is about a hike
or maybe something in the yard
or in the ponds which is not hard
as Nature is a willing guide
showing more than what she hides
and everywhere I choose to look
is another page from her open book
as beauty all around me grows
as the flowers are putting on a show.

What really bothers me
are the things that shape our destiny
as many things we can’t control
are forced upon our very soul
as we have very little say
in the things that happen day to day
as others the decisions make
they claim doing it for our sake
even in this Democracy
it is plain for all to see
that only one percent are doing fine
while the rest of us can only whine
and wait for the next election day
when we hope we have our say
and ours are the guys that make the rules
and we the ones who voted them in
will still be taking it on the chin
as our guys will no better be
than the ones already history.

Now let me see where was I now
as I turn on my computer to read the show
trying to stay abreast of things
looking to see what this day will bring
and reading about the same old stuff
just as though there isn’t enough
of pain and suffering and shootings too
why act this way I haven’t a clue
and Trump and his group more rules rescind
and Nature is taking it on the chin
and the Rich get richer with no help from us
and the sick get sicker with no one to trust
or to give them a helping hand
and the same is true all over the land.

I have stopped looking at the news
it is such a depressing view
to read all about such terrible waste
and Global Warming can’t make a case
the birds and animals and Parks and States
all are starting lose this race
as the idiots in charge keep tearing things down
all because of a billionaire clown
whose only interest is money and fame
and is playing a dangerous game
and has no thought for this Earth
and the damage which can’t be undone
remembered most as the one
The Man Who Let in the Sun.

I refuse to let this bother me
as outside of the window I see
plants and flowers putting on a show
and birds and squirrels some I know
as repeat visitors come to eat seed
at the feeders put out for their needs
and the Koi in the ponds are looking good
and the water is clear just as it should
and my pets are fine and in good health
and I feel good not acting my age
not ready to turn that final page
enjoying my life as best I can
without reading about that horrible man.

Today’s Thoughts

lp4-mckinneyI was thinking about the world we live in and how we treat it.
It has been around for millions of years evolving at a very slow rate
Mankind has been around for a few thousand years
and in that time has done his best to destroy the very planet we live on
Man is either blessed or cursed with the ability to think and use his brain
It has enabled him to invent all kinds of sometimes weird but always wonderful new things, but at what cost
Man has never been able to get along with his neighbor since the very beginning
Wars have been fairly commonplace and routine things throughout the centuries
Even without wars, Man still kills and maims his fellow beings either through greed or ignorance or sometimes for no reason at all
Not content with killing each other, Man has now turned his attention to killing the very planet  on which he lives
It is as though Man is too selfish, too greedy and probably way too stupid
This planet was born millions of years ago with life in the form of Man only a few thousand of its years
We are a very small speck in this timeline and after we have done our best to have destroyed ourselves, the planet will continue spinning around the sun without us
And this Earth will be better off as we fail to learn our lesson
We have been given the opportunity to make things right
Will we take it? My guess is NO and all will be lost.

A Funny Old World, but not in an amusing way…

global-warming-occur_f66875f8a4ac275e

We live in a funny old world except it is not an amusing place to be.

Our world is populated by man and beast and Nature and the three have been trying to cohabit for millions of years or at least, as long as man had walked on two feet. Prior to that, man and beast were pretty much equal and between them Mother Nature was able to hold her own.

Move along a few thousand years and man is now fully capable of not only walking upright but also has the ability to think. Once that happens, then the earth no longer lives in harmony. Man hunts beast and beast hunts Man and so Man dreams up bigger and better ways to hunt the beast. Man has not yet endangered the Earth but is thinking up ways to do so.

Another thousand years and Man has now learned not only how to hunt the beast to the point of extinction but has also raped the trees and forests to where it has started to affect our way of life. Man in his ever ongoing role to “modernize” the world and his all consuming greed and selfishness, is poisoning the atmosphere and the Earth is warming up.

Move along a couple of hundred years and many of the beasts are extinct caused by man and his incessant greed and the atmosphere is continuing to be poisoned by mans ignorance and failure to recognize the dangers. Man is now blaming man for the problems that both of them created. War is imminent.

A hundred more years, and most of the birds and animals are gone, victims of man’s greed and ignorance. Man’s numbers are also in decline due to the hotter temperatures and the unclean air, shortage of food and water, the rising sea levels and fighting with each other. Man is no longer in harmony with Mother Nature, the remaining animals and the fellow man.

A hundred years later, there is no man who, along with the animals and all things living including the plants and trees, has perished in the problems of man’s own making. The Earth is nothing but a barren planet too hot to live on and an atmosphere that is unbreathable, just like Mars.

Farewell Man and Beast and Mother Nature, Farewell Earth. It’s too late now…

Thoughts on a New Year

center-universe

The old year has finally gone
as Father Time marches on
forward in inexorable ways
nothing to stop him and no delays.

Time is not under our control
we do can do nothing to fill the hole
as today is born and fades away
tomorrow is already another day.

I wonder what this year will bring
what new friends with songs to sing
how many will pass on along the way
having travelled their journey and had their say.

Life is an ever moving thing
time does not stand and wait to sing
instead it keeps moving at a rapid pace
as we struggle to keep up in this race.

Our part of this time is indeed very small
and this incredible universe so tall
and has been around for millions of years
and hopefully will last a few million more.

It matters not how long the time
as ours on this earth is the blink of an eye
and yet we know we don’t have the right
to destroy our world without a fight.

As others more greedy can only see
money and riches as they pollute what is free
the air and the sky the water and the land
their need to be wealthy as they take with their hands.

Destroying what is not theirs to destroy
what belongs to us all both girls and boys
and every living thing on this earth should succeed
and the world should not end because of their greed.

Hopefully common sense will prevail
to make these unbelievers fail
like hotter land and rising seas
and maybe even the air that we breathe.

It’s not too late and we have the time
to get the others to change their minds
for the one thing I am very sure
they can’t take it with them as they exit the door.

Thoughts on a Rainy Day

DSC_1319Living in Texas, anytime we get rain, it is welcomed with open arms. More than a day or two of overcast skies and we yearn to see the sun again.
Such are the intricacies of the Texas mind.

We never had any winter this year. It barely got cold enough to wear a jacket let alone a heavy coat.

The plants are already full grown as there was no frost to knock them down. Good for not having major clean-up and bad because the new growth is restricted and it will require twice the work to cut everything back.

The fish came out of their hibernation early this year because the water warmed up much sooner than is normal. It was fun to see them active and feeding time produced its usual spectacular results.

I was able to start the pond renovation much sooner than I would have expected because of the mild weather. Does that mean that we will have a lot of 100 degree days this coming Summer forgoing Spring and moving directly into Summer?

My birthday seemed to come around much sooner this year. Are the years getting shorter?

Is global warming for real or was this Winter just an oddity?
